According to the Newsweek and Washington Post Challenge Index which attempts to measure a school’s effort to challenge its students, eight high schools in Greenville County and one in Pickens County made the top 5% of all national public schools. Out of the top 1300 schools ranked , Eastside was ranked 342, Southside 352, J.L. Mann 485, Wade Hampton 498, Mauldin 569, Riverside 705, Greenville High 842, and Hillcrest 923, while Daniel High in Pickens was 1,087. The ranking is derived with a simple formula: divide the number of Advance Placement, International Baccalaureate, or Cambridge tests a school gave by the number of seniors who graduated in May or June. Local startup company Seleh Technologies has inked a research and development deal with Osram Sylvania Inc. to see if their nanotechnology can be utilized in the production of lighting products. After initial testing, Seleh could be providing its specialty chemical product and machinery by the end of the year. Selah Technologies launched their company in 2006 after acquiring the rights to commercialize two technologies invented by Clemson University chemistry professor Ya-Ping Sun.
Jim Anthony of The Cliffs has donated $10 million and more than 355 acres on the Keowee River that enables Clemson University to develop a retreat for South Carolina teachers. The Teacher Renewal Center will offer a place for teachers to relax and develop professionally and is lauded by the State Secretary of Education Jim Rex as an “innovative way to tell teachers they are valued”.
